4 Tips For Working Out – After Work

When the office clock hits 5:00 pm, it can be tough to hit the gym. Your mind is numb from all the calls and computers, your back is stiff from that dubious swivel chair, and any viable energy was siphoned out long after the last 60-minute meeting. Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Here are four great ways to get motivated and get that work out in – after work.

1. Head Directly to the Gym, Do Not Pass “Go”

It may seem smart to head home first to get workout clothes, gym shoes and a water bottle. However, once your body sinks into the cushy contours of your couch, or your hand finds the universal remote, or the dirty dishes and laundry present themselves as a goal more integral to your overall efficiency … well, you get the idea. You aren’t going anywhere. So remove the “lazy bait” from the equation, and go directly to the gym after work.

2. Carry a “Do Everything” Gym Bag

It’s easy to head straight for the gym when you’re properly prepared. A well-packed gym bag includes more than just fresh workout clothes and gym shoes. Don’t forget a water bottle, a healthy snack such as a banana or apple (with peanut butter is fine), any necessary toiletries, and headphones if you plan on listening to tunes. It’s hard to bail when you’re already prepared!

3. Re-Energize and Re-Hydrate

Remember that snack you packed? Eat it about an hour before your workout (say 4:00/4:30 pm) to give yourself an energy boost, and drink 16 to 20 oz. of water while you’re at it. Why the need to eat? Working out lowers your blood sugar levels during the first 15-20 minutes of exercise, so without a boost, you could get extra tired or dizzy. On top of that, if you feel energetic after leaving work, you’re more liable to hit the gym.

4. Partner Up

We’ve mentioned it before, but we’ll say it again: if you have a workout buddy you’ve agreed to meet at the gym, it makes it that much harder to cancel after work. Consider also that having a friend there will add to the fun and give you extra workout options, like spotter-required free weights or some intense games of one-on-one basketball.

You know what to do. Now pack your gym bag, partner up and rep out!
