Social Media Tips for Personal Trainers


Personal training is about providing expertise, building relationships and giving support. It’s also about building a business. Social media is a tool that can help trainers accomplish all of those goals. I’m sure if you polled your clients, you would find that almost all are active on at least one social media channel, if not many. Just as important is the number of potential clients on social media. 

Platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube can be great channels for connection and marketing, but only if used in the right way. Whether you’re just considering utilizing social media or have been for a while, keep these tips in mind: 

1. Quality over Quantity: Choose one to three channels that will best help you achieve your goals. Consider where you clients are, the time you have to commit and the type of content you want to promote. For most, this is going to be Facebook. Not only is it the largest social network, but it also supports video content, images and conversation.

2. Cross-promote: Make sure to connect your channels so that clients and fans can find your content. Put social buttons on your website, include a link to your Facebook page on your YouTube channel and encourage current clients to connect with you online.

3. Update Consistently: It’s important to understand the time you can commit and keep any existing channels active. Create a content schedule to keep your pages fresh and active. Commit to updating 3 times per week, if not everyday. Monitor your channels for conversation and be quick to answer questions.

4. Keep it professional, but personal: Social media is all about connecting with people, but your business page is not the place to discuss your most recent break up. Let your clients and fans see your personality, but keep the conversation about fitness, motivation and health.

5. Recruit Clients: Run promotions or exclusive offers through your social media channels to recruit new clients and drive interest in your business.
