Dominic's Cycle Tour - 600 Miles Around Britain
A few weeks ago we met Dominic O'Sullivan as he stopped by locally on his 4 day cycle tour of Britain in aid of Scotty's Little Soldiers. After completing the ride we caught up with Dominic again and he gave us a breakdown of how it went, things he had to overcome and some stats from the ride.
“Every day was a 0500hrs start and most days ending 1800hrs or later, with a nightly routine of bike cleaning, clothing washing, refuel and prepare the bike for next day. Eat sleep ride repeat!
The ride was unsupported and the hardest part was finding water replenishment on the route, particularly the Saturday when it was direct sunlight and 30+ degrees heat all day. I had to carry all my spare kit; inner tubes, repair spares, arm and leg warmers, gilet, hydration tablets, phone and battery packs - the lot. With full water bottles this added up to a further 5kg to carry!
Central London was the most difficult day where the traffic and roadworks resulted in constant stop start.
Eventually due to weather conditions and some route mapping savings the trip was 600 miles or so over 4 days, I tracked the whole route using an app and some of the stats I pulled were:
- 37 hrs 7 mins riding time
- 20089ft of climbing
- 18869 calories burned
- Average speed 15mph overall.”
Dominic is building towards the Race Across Europe 2020, which is a 3000 mile solo cycle race and the record for completing it currently stands at 12 days, Dominic aims to beat this! His recent ride was the longest challenge he's undertaken so far in preparation, and this year so far he has covered 6200 miles in 202 rides which total 361 hours.
Next year is the 10th anniversary of the founding of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity set up by the wife of Cpl Lee Scott who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009; by taking part in the Race Across Europe Dominic is raising awareness of the work they do and the support they need to be able to continue.
We are in awe of Dominic's achievement on his 4 day ride and are behind him all the way as he continues to prepare for this epic challenge. If you'd like to find out more you can read more about the charity at www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk or watch this clip https://youtu.be/fY1a_G5X1wI
