UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

The University of Nottingham in England has 300 beautiful acres at its University Park campus. The school decided to transform some of the ample green space into inviting outdoor workout areas.

The addition of a running path and several SYNRGY BlueSky outdoor exercise systems was the ideal solution. The Active Trail opened in 2015. It is a 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) path encircling the campus that encourages current students to stay active and serves as an appealing draw for prospective students.

"The students tend to use the trail in the evenings once lectures have finished for the day. We have been delivering boot camp style classes as part of our fitness timetable and these are very popular. We hope as spring nears, and the brighter and warmer weather approaches, to increase the amount of classes we offer and engage others in making the most of the trail.”

MIXING ACADEMICS & ATHLETICS

The trail features five different modular SYNRGY BlueSky areas evenly spaced roughly 0.3 miles (0.5 km) apart. Exercisers benefit from the variety offered by two BlueSky 14 stations, one BlueSky 10 station and six BlueSky 2 stations (placed in two areas). The mix of stations allow for both small group training and individual workouts.

ACTIVE CAMPUS

The entire installation was introduced to the students through tutorials hosted by Nottingham’s strong sport and fitness team. The scalability of each exercise station accommodates exercisers of all abilities and fitness levels.

The Active Trail is not only an attractive amenity, it also represents Nottingham’s strong commitment to fitness and having a healthy student population.

"We chose a range of equipment and sizes to allow for a range of opportunities for our users. The larger pieces of equipment facilitate squad workouts and allow our clubs and scholarship athletes to be trained together. The smaller pieces of equipment are more friendly to individual users and those who wish to incorporate some strength training into a run as part of our wider active trail.”

BEYOND ACADEMICS

“The university understands the benefits of health and fitness to both our students and staff and therefore have recently invested in improving our sporting offer for all,” explained Bell-Minogue.

"It improves the student experience and offers them a different way of learning outside of their academic commitments.”
